An excellent article by Kim Wright at The Millions discusses the rising popularity of genre fiction and asks why so many literary and mainstream writers are turning to romance, thrillers, fantasy, mystery and YA. At the end, one of her conclusions is that ‘the future seems to be stories which combine the pacing and plot of genre with the themes and style of literary writing.’
